Why indoor days feel flat

Light is a nutrient.

And most of us have terrible diets.

We evolved under the sun, but now we spend 90% of our time indoors [1], and it’s sapping our energy and ruining our health.

Typical light levels. Yours will vary.

Indoor lighting is empty calories. It might be bright enough to see, but your body clock never gets the message. Aryal gives you enough light for your brain to know it’s daytime.

The science in 30 seconds

How light tells your brain it’s daytime

to your brain
Rods and cones, for seeingipRGCs, for measuring light

Thousands of cells in your eyes don’t help you see, they just measure light.

Intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells, or ipRGCs. They use a pigment called melanopsin to measure overall brightness, rather than to form an image.

Berson, Dunn and Takao, Science, 2002

Your body clock, a tiny spot deep in your brain

Your body clock needs this signal to work out if it’s day or night.

ipRGCs signal the suprachiasmatic nucleus, your master clock, via the retinohypothalamic tract. The brighter the light, the stronger the signal.

250 Not daytime yet It’s daytime

Scientists measure this light in melanopic EDI, and 250 is the magic number.

Melanopic equivalent daylight illuminance measures how strongly light registers with your ipRGCs. An international expert panel recommends at least 250 at eye level through the day.

CIE S 026, 2018. Brown et al., PLOS Biology, 2022

To your eyes To your body clock

Your vision adjusts brilliantly, so indoors may look bright enough, but to your body clock, it’s far from it.

Rods and cones adapt to dim light. ipRGCs track how much light there really is. When researchers pooled studies of office workers wearing light sensors, not one office reached 250 melanopic EDI all day.

de Vries et al., Lighting Research & Technology, 2024

250 Typical office With Aryal

Aryal gets enough light to your eyes for your brain to know it’s daytime.

Over 250 lux melanopic EDI at the corneal plane, through the working day. Aryal adjusts itself to the light already in your room and how far you’re sitting from it, so it never feels harsh.

This chart is an illustrative example, not a precise representation.

Melanopic EDI measures light the way ipRGCs see it. Aryal is a wellness product, not a medical device.
